Could Big Changes Be Coming For Our Small Town?
There has been a lot of talk lately on the growth of our small town, Black Mountain, and unanswered questions of what to expect. The Black Mountain News reported this week that after the latest Town Hall Meeting, developer Lenny Weaver received a "special use" permit to build a 60-unit condo development on Sweet Birch Ln off of Blue Ridge Rd. The 10-acre site, currently a horse pasture, is zoned for residential use. Weaver wants to build 30 arts & crafts inspired duplexes. According to the development plans, the duplexes in the development will face inward, along the tree-lined, private street that will serve them. The hearing held at Town Hall drew in so many people that the board reserved seating for those who live closest to the project. Others watched proceedings outside the room on closed circuit TV. Residents and neighbors alike were able to voice their concerns; majority were the questions of how much traffic would this cause on South Blue Ridge Rd; additional rooftop storm water runoff from the the run into the Swannanoa River; and more. For now, the board couldn't justify a reason to deny the developer the "special use" permit. Construction is currently set to begin in Spring of 2018.
